Light-related variation in sapling architecture of three shade-tolerant tree species of the Mexican rain forest

چکیده
The crown architecture of three shade-tolerant tree species (two subcanopy and one mid-canopy) was analyzed in relation to the light regime of the forest understorey. The aim was to examine to which extent shade-tolerant species variate in their crown architecture. Tree saplings (265) between 50 and 300 cm height, and distributed from understorey to variously-sized canopy gaps, were measured for 13 architectural traits in the lowland rain forest of Los Tuxtlas, México. The analysis showed that the three species changed their architecture as light increased but in a different way. No species conformed to the typical wide-crown type expected for shade-tolerant species, and in contrast they presented some traits of light demanding species. The two sub-canopy species tended to adopt a crown form between a narrowand wide-crown type, and the midcanopy species showed more traits of a narrow-crown type. The horizontal crown area appeared as the more related trait to the light and sapling height. It is concluded that despite being shade-tolerant, the studied species make use of better-lit environments in the forest understorey. The crown architecture of shade-tolerant species is not as rigid as originally conceived.

Asymptotic Height as a Predictor of Photosynthetic Characteristics in Malaysian Rain Forest Trees
Comparative studies of photosynthetic physiology in rain forest trees have focused on differences related to successional status, with the general finding that earlysuccessional species tend to show physiological characteristics of sun plants, while latesuccessional species show shade-plant characteristics. The present study examines analogous evolutionary responses to vertical gradients in lig...

In the northeastern US, the availability of light and nitrogen (N) limits the rate of woody plant growth in the forest understory and N limits forest productivity. Interspeci®c differences in the growth responses of saplings to the availability of these resources could affect the species composition of forest communities. While many studies have examined the relationship between shade-tolerance...
متن کاملThe relationships of wood-, gas- and water fractions of tree stems to performance and life history variation in tropical trees.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The volume of tree stems is made up of three components: solid wood, gas and water. These components have important consequences for the construction costs, strength and stability of trees. Here, the importance of stem components for sapling growth and survival in the field was investigated, and then these stem components were related to two important life history axes of va...
متن کاملBirds see the trees inside the forest: The potential impacts of changes in forest composition on songbirds during spring migration
Since European settlement, hardwood dominated forests of the Upper American Midwest have undergone compositional changes due to fire suppression and changes in land use. It is not clear how these changes affect songbirds during spring migration. In 2009 and 2010, we quantified foraging behavior by migratory songbirds during spring migration and collected data on tree and sapling diversity in th...

Resource partitioning has been hypothesized to play a role in the maintenance of tree diversity in tropical forests. We looked for evidence of light and soil moisture partitioning among seedlings of four native Malagasy tree species, the pioneer, gap-adapted species Harungana madagascariensis and the three shade-tolerant species Ocotea cymosa, Stephanostegia capuronii and Uapaca ferruginea.
